Why Your Child Needs a Sports Physical

If your child plans to participate in sports through school, a park district, or another program, a sports physical is probably required. Getting physical in advance is a great way to ensure children are in good physical condition and will not be putting their health or safety at risk by playing sports. The skilled providers at Glacier Pediatrics in Juneau perform sports physicals throughout the year.

What to Expect During a Sports Physical

There are several components to sports physicals, including a physical exam and a review of your child’s medical history. If your child has allergies, an existing condition, or is taking any medications, those topics will be discussed as well. The doctor can explain whether or not there is any concern about playing sports with certain allergies, an existing medical condition, or while taking a particular medication.

If your child has recently experienced any unusual symptoms, such as dizziness or shortness of breath, that should be addressed as well. New symptoms could be a sign of an undiagnosed issue, such as asthma or an allergy. Depending on the issue, your child’s provider can prescribe a treatment that will allow your son or daughter to safely play sports. For example, wheezing or shortness of breath could mean your child has asthma. A prescription portable inhaler could enable your child to still participate in athletic activities.

Another important aspect of a sports physical is the physical exam. Several measurements are taken, including height, weight, temperature, and blood pressure. Pulse, heart rate, reflexes, and flexibility are checked as well. Other things that are assessed during the physical exam include the eyes, ears, nose, and throat, as well as the abdomen and spine. The provider will also check the lungs by listening to your child’s breathing with a stethoscope.

A sports physical at our office in Juneau also provides a convenient opportunity to catch up on any missed vaccinations. The doctor might also discuss nutrition and healthy eating habits to help your child maintain optimal health. Additionally, the physician can recommend certain stretches or exercises to improve flexibility and strength, which could help prevent sports injuries.

Your child might need sports physical as a requirement to participate, but they are also important to ensure your child is healthy enough to safely play without being at an increased risk of illness or injury.
