Newborn Development Milestones

Babies are considered newborns for the first 28 days of life. Those days fly by so quickly because new parents are learning how to meet the needs of their little ones while still caring for themselves. That includes getting in that much-needed sleep, right? Dr. Amy Dressel and nurse practitioner Lauren Hopson PNP at Glacier Pediatrics has worked with many new parents and wants to help new parents learn about critical milestones in the first month of life. She welcomes new parents in search of an established pediatrician in Juneau, AK.

Your Baby’s Development in Month One

What can a baby accomplish in just one month of life? More than you may imagine if you’re expecting your first or have recently given birth.

It may seem like your baby does very little besides cry, eat, and fill those diapers. What you don’t see is the spectacular speed of growth happening within every cell of your new baby’s body. Those cries for food ensure your baby receives the nutrients needed to grow. With growth comes essential developments that allow your baby to thrive.

The following list will introduce you to some of the most important newborn development milestones. Keep this list so that you can follow your baby’s progress in the first month of life. Routine visits with our pediatrician in Juneau, AK, will help you determine your baby’s developmental progress right from birth.

Uncontrolled Arm Movements

In the first month of life, babies start exploring their own faces and the surrounding world with rather uncontrolled arm movements. They may hit themselves in the face or others holding them close. Babies may also start to roll their hands into fists within the first month.

Early Head Movements

Your baby is also learning to move his or her head in the first month. When placed on their stomach on a soft, safe surface, they should start to move their head from one side to another. You may also notice this side-to-side motion as your new baby looks around to explore the surrounding environment.

Respond to Sound

What does your newborn do when she or he hears your voice? What about the voices of siblings or other parents and caregivers? Over the course of the newborn stage, you should notice your baby starting to recognize those voices as well as other familiar sounds.
